Electrical and plumbing

Does a Finished Basement Need Electrical and Plumbing?

A finished basement can be used for daily living activities, recreation, as a bedroom, and more. Therefore, it makes sense that it should have electricity readily available. However, many people don't go ahead with plumbing, thinking that the plumbing that's already in the rest of the house can take care of all needs. This is usually a mistake.

Without plumbing in the basement, those who are down there have to go all the way up to the next level for simple things like getting a glass of water or using the toilet. It can take the momentum out of games, force the pausing of videos and music, and more. Those who sleep down there will most likely end up fully alert, and not able to get back to sleep, if they have to hike up a set of stairs for a middle-of-the-night bathroom run and then carefully come back down. These things are totally unnecessary aggravations that are easily prevented by having a finished basement plumbed as well as wired.

Because of this, you should expect to add both electrical and plumbing to your basement plans. The end result is a space that is just as usable as the main level of your house, and therefore, just as enjoyable. It is well worth the initial expense.

Residential building contractors are willing to build to any plan that meets code and architectural requirements, but that doesn't mean that you should leave essentials out of your project. Make sure to include electrical and plumbing in your plans. You and other residents of your house will be very glad to be able to use a sink or toilet without having to go all the way upstairs, and so will your guests.
